Edie cardigan

The Edie cardigan – £6.00

Edie is a versatile open-front cardigan in two lengths: depending on your fabric choice, it can be a summer coverup, a layering piece for the transitional seasons, or a winter coatigan. Make the standard version and add a workhorse item to your handmade wardrobe, or make the maxi version and go for the wow factor!

Recommended fabrics

Sweater knits are the best kind of fabric for Edie. You can also use any stretch jersey with good drape, such as cotton jersey, viscose or rayon jersey, or bamboo jersey. Alternatively, you can make a heavier-weight or ‘coatigan’ version by using a more stable fabric, such as sweatshirting, scuba or ponte. Please note that if you use a very thick fabric, you may wish to increase the width of the sleeves so that your cardigan is not tight in this area. We have prepared a simple guide for this alteration: on our website http://valentineandstitch.com go to ‘Patterns’ and then ‘Tutorials’, and click on ‘Widening sleeves’.

Other supplies

We also recommend that you use a short strip of 1cm/ ⅜” wide knit stay tape, clear elastic, twill tape or grosgrain ribbon, a little longer than the centre back neckline, to stabilise the back neck of your cardigan.

Fabric requirements

If you have a plain fabric without a directional print, you may well be able to make your Edie with less fabric by turning some pieces upside down.

Because of the side shaping and the drape of the front piece, the side hem of Edie will dip slightly below the back length.

Maxi cardigan length and sleeve length

If you are sewing the maxi length cardigan and you think it may be too long for you (consult the “finished garment length” sections above if you are unsure), we recommend that you grade up to the hemline of a smaller size, rather than trying to shorten the cardigan pieces. This recommendation is owing to the unique shape of the front piece of Edie – it will be much simpler just to raise the hem by using one of the existing hemlines.

Please also note that the sleeves for Edie are slightly longer than wrist length – this is to allow you to pull the sleeves over your hands for added cosiness! If you prefer your sleeves to end at the wrist, we recommend that you raise the sleeve hem by 1-1½”/ 3-4cm according to your personal preference.
